The Minister of Public Works and Transport in the caretaker government, Youssef Fenianos, held a meeting with a delegation of the Lebanese University headed by Dr. Rafik Younes, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering. The delegation expressed the readiness to prepare a comprehensive and detailed study of the collapsed site in Chekka region, to prepare for the completion of the required works according to the study undertaken by specialists from Branch 1 faculty professors.

The meeting included the committee consisting of Dr. Chaiban Haykal, Dr. Emil Youssef and Dr. Kheireddine Ghalayini, in addition to the Director General of Roads and Buildings, Engineer Tanios Boulos, Director of the Minister’s Office, Chakib Khoury and Advisor Pierre Baaklini.

The study will kick-off in two phases: Phase 1 consists of reopening the coastal road, securing traffic between Beirut and Tripoli, and replacing the closed line with a temporary new line, up to the completion of Phase 2 related to fixing the slope, until the road is permanently opened.

It was agreed during the meeting, to submit the study to Minister Fenianos within a two-week period, noting that the Ministry provided the team with the available database, on condition of coordinating with the General Directorate of Roads and Buildings. It was also agreed to maintain the currently approved traffic procedures to ensure traffic safety.

Fenianos thanked Dean Younes and the accompanying delegation for this initiative, praising their efforts and patriotism, and putting all data available in the Ministry in the service of this project.
