A 70-year-old woman breaks down age barriers and returns to university
French philosopher Albert Camus said that we learn to live, which means that we learn not to fear the passing of time. This maxim is now being put into practice by Wafaa Nasser, a Lebanese woman in her 70s.
At the Faculty of Fine Arts and Architecture (FFAA) of the Lebanese University - North Branch, Wafaa sat among students younger than her grandchildren, as if to open a new chapter in her life entitled “It's never too late to learn.”
Wafaa Nasser – graduate student
"I wanted to fulfill my dream, which came to a halt when I got married. But when the COVID crisis broke out, I told myself that I had to pursue my dream and continue drawing. I obtained this degree to carry out a project, that of Arabic, the Arabic language that I see disappearing, replaced by foreign letters, and I am trying to revive this Arabic language through drawing."
Her journey has been a long one of joy and tears for a woman who has become a symbol of struggle and from whom everyone can learn.
Issam Obeid – Director of the FFAA, North Branch
"Today, Wafaa is graduating from the FBAA. She is the oldest of our graduates and insisted on graduating with honors. Wafaa Nasser is almost 75 years old and is graduating today as a designer and visual artist.
Her story embodies the message of the Lebanese University, which is that passion is stronger than time and that knowledge is open to all.
