7/5/2025 - Launch of training courses for FI students in partnership with Al Jazeera

The training courses for journalism students, organized by the Lebanese University in partnership with Al Jazeera Qatar, kicked off at the Faculty of Information - Branch 1, under the patronage and in the presence of President Bassam Badran.

The launch ceremony was attended by the Director General of the Ministry of Information, Dr. Hassan Falah, the President of the Lebanese Journalists' Syndicate, Joseph Kossaifi, the Dean of the Faculty of Information, Dr. Jocelyne Nader, the Director of Branch 1, Dr. Rami Najm, the Director of Branch 2, Dr. Nisrine Zammar, Director of Initiatives at Al Jazeera Media Institute, Montaser Merhi, Coordinator of Al Jazeera Media Institute Ambassadors Initiative, Youssef Awad, Director of Research at the Faculty of Information, Dr. Wafa Abou Chakra, in addition to a number of Al Jazeera journalists and trainers and a group of students.

At the beginning of the meeting, Dr. Abou Chakra spoke about the cooperation with Al Jazeera and the coincidence of the event with World Press Freedom Day and Press Martyrs Day in Lebanon.

Dean Nader then gave a speech in which she thanked Al Jazeera for this cooperation, which creates a dynamic between the academic world and the profession on the one hand, and between fellow Arab institutions on the other, hoping that this initiative will be the beginning of long-term partnerships and joint projects in the future.

Mr. Merhi addressed the experience of field journalists in crises and wars, noting that the Western model that taught us the principles and ethics of journalism turned its back on journalists in the Gaza war and the war on Lebanon.

Chief Kossaifi then gave a speech in which he spoke about the new media draft law in Lebanon, noting the efforts of the Administration & Justice Committee to finalize it in the near future, given that there are objections and questions surrounding this draft.

Dr. Falha considered that this educational and training media activity carried out by the Faculty of Information in collaboration with Al Jazeera will yield positive and valuable results for both parties.

President Badran gave a speech, beginning with a minute of silence for the souls of the faculty martyrs and the martyrs of journalism. He said: “I am delighted to share with you this remarkable activity, which embodies the Lebanese University's commitment to providing quality education and keeping pace with modern developments in the field of media. This training course, organized in collaboration with Al Jazeera Center, represents a fundamental step towards enhancing the skills of journalism students and preparing them to face professional challenges in the ever-changing world of media. Journalism is not just a profession, but a mission and a responsibility in this age of rapid information and technology. The role of journalists is becoming increasingly important in conveying the truth, analyzing events, and providing objective content that serves society. Hence the importance of training courses to impart practical skills and modern techniques that help achieve distinction in this vital field.”

He added: “Dear trainees, the collaboration with Al Jazeera Center reflects the Faculty of Information's commitment to providing a rich learning environment where you will have the opportunity to benefit from the expertise of leading media professionals and practitioners in the field. We believe that practical training and direct interaction with experts contribute to refining skills and boosting self-confidence, which will enable you to enter the job market with competence and readiness. I therefore invite you to make the most of this opportunity and actively engage in the training sessions and interact with the trainers and experts. You are the future of the media, and you have a great responsibility in shaping the media landscape of tomorrow. Rise to this responsibility and continue to strive for excellence and creativity.”

President Badran concluded his speech by thanking everyone who contributed to organizing this course, including professors and administrators, and also thanked Al Jazeera Center for its initiative aimed at developing media work, supporting young students, and enriching their professional experience.
