On 16 May 2024, the international scientific journal "Scientific Research Publishing" published a scientific study by a group of researchers from the Lebanese University regarding the characteristics of dissolved organic matter in neighboring urban watersheds in the Eastern Mediterranean, entitled: "Dissolved Organic Matter Features of Three Adjacent Eastern Mediterranean Urbanized Watersheds".
The study focused on how urbanization affects ecosystems in coastal watersheds, namely the amount of dissolved organic matter in rivers.
The results of the study indicated a high concentration of dissolved organic carbon from upstream to downstream for the rivers studied, namely the Nahr Ibrahim, the Beirut River, and the Nahr El Kalb River.
