Students from the Faculty of Engineering - Branch 2 design a device for people with visual impairments
Students from the Faculty of Engineering – Branch 2 have developed a smart, wearable system for people with visual impairments as part of their graduation projects for the academic year 2025–2026 in the fields of computer and communications engineering and electrical engineering.
With the goal of building a practical system based on real-world needs, the students (Mia Dani Matar, Tanios Jean Claude Feghali, and Joya Jihad Khalil El Feghaly) visited the Lebanese School for the Blind and Deaf in Baabda, where the idea for the project and its testing began.
The innovative “Wearable Smart System for People with Visual Impairments” combines embedded computing, computer vision, sensors, and voice interaction, and aims to provide the user with additional information to help them understand and interact with their surroundings, as follows:
- Identifies significant obstacles and notifies the user of their location
- Helps the user locate and approach specific objects
- Reads printed text aloud
- Recognizes banknotes
- Identifies products through their barcodes
- Provides these functions through a hands-free wearable system
The project’s significance lies in its ability to operate offline and combine engineering, artificial intelligence, and assistive technology to provide practical solutions for the blind and visually impaired. It is also scalable, allowing it to evolve from an engineering concept into an assistive device usable in everyday life.
